Why is grammar important? I can speak English fluently already?
Good question! Knowledge of proper grammar is the foundation of strong written and spoken English. We find that while most of our students have been exposed to English for quite a long time, they are nonetheless only fluent in a type of “broken English”. This English level, unfortunately, does not reflect the level of professionalism or education the student may possess or aspire to. Moreover, students who profess to be fluent in English, come to realize that they are uncomfortable with their level of academic writing. Other times students feel that their fluency is not even on par with other non-native English speakers. Benchmark’s goal, therefore, is to help our students strengthen their spoken and written English so that it is as refined as possible.
My placement test says that I'm at a beginner level. can that be correct?
The test doesn’t discriminate. Barring any learning disabilities or distractions during the testing process, the results are accurate. As stated above, at times ones previous learning environments may have placed higher emphasis upon conversational English and less upon the basics of grammar and structure. If the knowledge of grammar exists, the placement test results will reflect that.
how do i know if my English has improved after my course has finished?
The components of the Grammar Series are based upon objective, measurable core competencies in grammar. Mastery of those competencies is easier to measure. You will be offered a review for your level in order to confirm that you have indeed mastered those skills. On the other hand, Business English, Conversational English or Homework Help are less focused on individual growth in English and are therefore more difficult to measure. That said, for those classes that do not focus on grammar, the placement test is strongly encouraged so that you can determine how far you have come as an individual. Please bear in mind that individualized support in our group classes is not included. Speak to us about taking Benchmark’s CEFR placement test!
